DR. ONG KEE LEONG

Hip Bursitis

Hip bursitis is one of the most common hip injuries treated by Dr. Ong. He aims to provide prompt and comprehensive treatment for this injury to avoid more severe complications.

What Is Hip Bursitis?

Hip bursitis is the irritation and inflammation of the bursa located in the hip. The bursa is a tiny, liquid-filled sac that protects the surrounding tissues and prevents friction between the bones and soft tissues (such as muscles, tendons or ligaments).

What Causes Hip Bursitis?

  • Hip injury
  • Overuse of the hip joint during running, cycling or climbing
  • Certain medical conditions, such as rheumatoid arthritis or scoliosis
  • Obesity

What Does Hip Bursitis Feel Like?

The symptoms of hip bursitis vary depending on the type of bursitis.

  • For Trochanteric Bursitis, your inflamed bursa is located at the top of the thighbone outside the hip. Pain and tenderness are commonly experienced in the outer hip and thigh. There may also be a gradual burning pain, which can be aggravated with excessive walking or stair climbing.
  • For Iliopsoas Bursitis (Ischial Bursitis), the bursa inside your hip becomes inflamed. Pain is usually experienced in the groin or buttock area.
  • For Septic Hip Bursitis, your bursa becomes infected, and hence the complications may be more severe. Apart from the typical pain and swelling experienced, you may also have a slight fever and feel fatigued.

How Will Dr. Ong Diagnose Hip Bursitis?

Dr. Ong will conduct imaging tests to confirm the diagnosis. X-rays help eliminate other forms of injury, such as a fracture, while MRI scans are usually effective in establishing hip bursitis.

Alternatively, blood tests or fluid analyses from the inflamed bursa may be conducted to determine the exact cause of joint pain and inflammation.

How Is Hip Bursitis Treated?

Non-Surgical Options

The common non-surgical remedies recommended by hip specialists typically include:

  • Rest. Avoiding excessive hip movement can prevent further irritation and inflammation of your bursa.
  • Ice compression can minimise swelling and redness.
  • Anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen and aspirin can be taken to alleviate pain and reduce swelling.
  • A cortisone injection may also be directly administered to the affected joint area to treat swelling.
  • Physical therapy may be recommended to regain the function and mobility of the hips.
  • Aspiration. This is the removal of excess liquid from a swollen and inflamed bursa using a special thin needle to alleviate pain. Samples of this substance may be sent for further testing if your bursa is suspected to be infected.

Surgical Option

Surgery is rarely performed for hip bursitis. However, if non-surgical treatment options are not successful, your bursa may need to be removed.

Bursectomy, which is the surgical drainage and removal of the bursa sac, is a standard treatment of an infected bursa.

How to Prevent Hip Bursitis?

  • Warm up and stretch your body before exercising
  • Take frequent interval breaks when exercising to rest your hips
  • Avoid excessive and repetitive movements that strain the hips
  • Maintain a healthy weight
