Ankle Ligament Tear (Ankle Sprain)
Ankle sprains may be common, but they pose more severe complications if not treated promptly and appropriately. Dr. Ong offers prompt, effective and personalised solutions to ankle injuries.
What Is an Ankle Ligament Tear?
Ankle ligament tear, commonly known as an ankle sprain, is a rupture of the ankle ligaments, causing swelling and pain. It is one of the most common conditions treated by a foot and ankle specialist.
What Are the Symptoms?
- Tenderness
- Snapping or popping sensation
- Bruising
- Swelling of the ankle
- Restricted ankle mobility
- Ankle instability
- Sharp pain, especially when you walk or bear weight on the injured foot
What Causes It?
- Falls from walking or running, which can twist the ankle
- Direct hit
- Sudden changes in movement when pivoting or jumping
How to Diagnose It?
A physical examination will be conducted to test your ankle’s range of motion and stability via several simple motion exercises.
Further imaging tests such as an x-ray, MRI scan or ultrasound may be performed to rule out other possible causes of pain (such as a bone fracture) and evaluate the extent of ligament damage to confirm the diagnosis.
How Is It Treated?
- RICE approach
- Rest. Restrict your movement and avoid activities that cause pain to your ankle.
- Ice. Applying cold compression to your sprained ankle can alleviate swelling and pain.
- Compress. Wrapping an elastic bandage firmly around your sprained ankle helps to immobilise the ankle and reduce swelling.
- Elevate. Elevating your ankle above your heart level can minimise swelling by reducing blood flow.
- Over-the-counter pain relievers
- Physical therapy, which includes gentle stretching and strengthening exercises
- Surgery. Surgery to repair or reconstruct a ligament may be required if symptoms persist or the ankle remains unstable despite non-surgical treatment options.
